The production of “rhythms of responsibility” for childcare in a post-socialist society

Drawing on 32 face-to-face interviews with mothers and childcare providers in Latvia, this paper examines the mundane mobilities. We argue that attention to mobilities reveals crucial arrangements of rhythms. Moving from places, around homes children are central provision childcare. These expressed temporal personal rhythms, continuities, disruptions. Mundane link locations between family care providers. Childcare further shaped by a reduction formal supply post-socialist Latvia its replacement informal arrangements. Through morally negotiated responsibilities childcare, certain rhythms emerge, including care-time neighbourhoods, walking other travel routines, play activities children. The paper’s theoretical contribution builds geographical sociological interpretations mobility literature, here focus rhythm analysis applied everyday life. Its rests an understanding how precarity is experienced, negotiated, special society.
